A fine performance of Peter Graham’s ‘On Alderley Edge’ saw Camborne Band come runner-up at the SWBBA Championships in Torquay last weekend, beaten only by their West Country rivals, Aldbourne, as they took the honours back to Wiltshire for the first time.
Despite the disappointment of not winning the Championships for the second year in succession, it was a fine performance led by the band's Music Director, Kevin Mackenzie – especially as the adjudicators later revealed that it had been ‘very close’ between the two championship section contenders, in deciding the destination of the title.
The MD was proud but refective of the performance. “Our congratulations go to Aldbourne, who were deserved winners", he said.
“We had a few errors around the band but on the whole I am very pleased with the performance – especially as we had such an early draw, playing second out of twelve contenders. I’m very proud of the band and the way they played. It was a fine performance.”
Band Secretary, Marcus Dunstan, commented on a very pleasing day: “To come so close off an early draw at the contest is a great achievement. The band had a great sound and felt in control at all times - the odd slip cost us today. It shows that only a great performance could beat us – and off a much more favourable later draw, so if we play like that next year I’m sure we will return to Camborne with a trophy in our grasp.”
